Chlorophyll Concentration from 2000 to 2019

Ocean Chlorophyll Concentrations. The concentration of chlorophyll is an indicator for the amount of photosynthetic plankton, or phytoplankton , present in the ocean. Phytoplankton populations are influenced by climatic factors

At the base of the oceanic food web are single-celled algae and other organisms similar to plants called phytoplankton. Like land plants, phytoplankton uses chlorophyll and other light recovery pigments to photosynthesize by absorbing atmospheric carbon dioxide to produce sugars as fuel. Chlorophyll in water alters the way it reflects and absorbs sunlight, allowing scientists to map the amount and location of phytoplankton. These measurements provide scientists with valuable information about the health of the ocean environment and help them study the oceanic carbon cycle.

These chlorophyll maps show milligrams of chlorophyll per cubic meter of seawater each month. Areas where chlorophyll levels were very low, indicating that a very low number of phytoplankton is blue. The places where chlorophyll concentrations were high, which means that a large amount of phytoplankton was growing, are dark green. The observations come from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA's Aqua satellite. The ground is dark gray and the areas where MODIS could not collect data due to sea ice, polar darkness or pale gray clouds.

The highest concentrations of chlorophyll, where surface oceanic plants thrive, are found in cold polar waters or in places where ocean currents bring cold water to the surface, such as around the equator and along the ocean. from the coasts of the continents. It is not the cold water itself that stimulates phytoplankton. On the contrary, cold temperatures often indicate that water has risen to the surface from the depths of the ocean, transporting nutrients accumulated over time. In polar waters, nutrients accumulate in surface waters during the dark winter months when plants cannot grow. When sunlight returns in spring and summer, plants bloom in high concentration.
